What is your favorite or most unforgettable memory from your time as a Logger?
One of my favorite memories as an 69·çÁ÷ student comes from Tony Rothering’s Vertebrate Zoology class. During a field lab, we went to a nearby creek bed and set up nets to tag and release bats. Tony is a great teacher who really brought the academic material to life and that level of engagement made for a very rewarding experience.
Favorite 69·çÁ÷ instructor, advisor or mentor?
There are so many great 69·çÁ÷ faculty members, but my favorite has to be Dr. John Roberts, who retired after teaching for 48 years. I took all of his history classes here at 69·çÁ÷ and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in History from UIS, due in large part to how influential his classes were to me. Beyond being a great teacher, he was the embodiment of the values 69·çÁ÷ tries to promote. There has been no greater example of a person who cares so deeply for an institution, his community and especially the students we are helping to prepare for the world.
How did your time at 69·çÁ÷ impact your career or life path or your decision to work here?
I enrolled in the Network Administration program at 69·çÁ÷ right out of high school. By my second semester, I had started as a student worker, a role I held while finishing my degree. Upon graduation, a full-time position opened up, giving me a wonderful opportunity to launch my professional IT career right here at the college. While my coursework provided the technical skills for my field, my time as a student worker allowed me to put those skills into practice in a real-world environment.
What do you enjoy most about working at 69·çÁ÷ now?
There is much to enjoy about working for 69·çÁ÷, but the best part is the opportunity to come to work every day and have an impact at an institution that has such a positive effect on our community. We help educate and train people to become better versions of themselves—whether they are taking the next step in their professional careers, preparing to transfer to a four-year college or seeking personal enrichment.
What advice would you give to current or future 69·çÁ÷ students?
My advice is to take full advantage of all the resources 69·çÁ÷ offers—not just the classroom experiences. The Learning Center provides excellent library services and tutoring to support your academic success. 69·çÁ÷ Student Engagement and Well Being hosts events, student clubs and leadership opportunities that help you grow personally and socially. The Career Center is a great resource for exploring career and major options, as well as preparing for today’s and tomorrow’s job markets. Building strong relationships with 69·çÁ÷ faculty, staff and fellow students can expand your network and create a solid support system to help you thrive. Make the most of these opportunities—they can truly shape your college experience and set you up for success.
